As mothers, wives, girlfriends, best friends, daughters... as women.... we tend to put our own needs AFTER our kids, our husbands, our parents, our friends, our co-workers, our everyone.
This month was a whirlwind of past due doctors appointments for me. From paps to mammos and everything in between, I finally HAD to see my doctors, and I HAD to put myself first for a couple days.
I find that women's health issues are still viewed as somewhat "private" and it's not always easy to find the truth, or even information about some topics. I come from a mother who was extremely private about everything, especially women's issues. As a teen girl, I learned most of what I needed to know from Health class, friends and Judy Blume's, "Are You There God? It's Me. Margaret".
Now that my mom has passed on, I find it frustrating when my doctor asks me questions like, "Did your mother have this condition?" I just want to yell "I don't f****g know!" I wish I did, but she never shared, and now she's gone.
So, I've been faced with the challenges that many women experience in mid-life:
Abnormal mammograms
Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP)
Vericose veins
Perimenopause
MEN-O-PAUSE (lol! - I always feel better when I write it like that!)
We will dive into the nitty-gritty details of these issues in later posts. But I really want you all to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE! You are completely, 100% NORMAL. These conditions suck, but we need to tap into the time, commitment and strength we give to others for ourselves, at least on occasion. 💕
